First Presbyterian -- Emmett
Emmett's congregation has been blessed to have the talented Mildred Dixon McFadden as their accompanist for the last decade or so. Mildred has been the musical mentor for thousands of young people since she and her husband, Jim, moved from Glenns Ferry to Emmett so she could become the orchestra teacher for the Emmett schools. Although she had no children of her own, she taught music students into the last week of her life. She no longer charged for lessons. She not only expected excellence from her students, she exemplified it by playing in the Boise Philharmonic and the Meridian Symphony.
On Tuesday, March 18, she fell in her home, breaking her upper arm near the shoulder. It could not be set in a cast. It was a very painful break, and she was kept comfortable with medication, but she quickly slipped into a coma and died on Wednesday. The memorial service on Friday, March 28, saw the sanctuary filled with former students, friends and colleagues.
Mildred left a legacy of bringing people together with music. She willed one of her Steinway pianos to the Emmett church. She was very generous with her time and her talents. She established a scholarship at Emmett High School for talented music students to further their education. She also supported many projects of the Retired Teachers' Association and the P.E.O. Sisterhood to help provide scholarships for women's educational development.
